Austin City Limits Festival, from the sky.

On a rare occasion, I get to do something truly incredible. This weekend, I went up in a helicopter to photograph ACL Fest from the sky. With much internal squealing and butterflies in my stomach I was lucky enough to circle the festival several times to shoot it from all angles. Then, much to my delight (and for reasons I will never quite understand because it had nothing to do with the festival), the pilot flew us up Congress Ave THROUGH THE BUILDINGS, around the Capitol, the to campus and we circled the UT Tower as well. Again, I have no idea why, but I'm really thankful we did!!

Gluten-Free Goodness

Most of you don't know this about me, but I've been gluten-free for five years. While this is a great challenge sometimes, if you've suffered from having gluten allergies or from Celiac disease, you know how a gluten-free diet is worth it. Soooo worth it. People ask me if I miss bread. The answer is always a firm "No." I don't feel terrible all the time, so who cares about bread? However, sometimes I miss cookies. Cakes....what can I say? I'm human.

My genius baker friend (and gluten-free compadre), Karen Morgan, has written a cookbook that focuses on all those little treats we normally have to admire from afar. Her company is called Blackbird Bakery and is based out of Austin. She makes the most delightful, delicious baked goods that she is now sharing with the world. Trust me, even if you're NOT gluten-free, you'll adore these delectables.

My super talented friend, Knoxy of Knox Photographics lovingly shot all of the images for the cookbook too. The result is a truly gorgeous and inviting cookbook. How lucky am I to have such talented friends???

In addition to the book being available on Amazon and other bookstores across the country in October, it's also available now at Anthropologie!!

Congratulations @blackbirdbakes and @knoxphotogrphcs!!! I'm so proud and excited. I'm also going to attempt some of the recipes although I've never been much of a baker....

I'm off to Anthopologie now.

The Parish is an institution as a music venue here in Austin, TX aka: The Live Music Capital of The World. They've also recently gotten the genius idea of offering certain evenings for events. This recently renovated space would work beautifully as a reception venue or even an after party. It would also work as for a corporate event, private party, gala, pretty much any kind of event that needs a downtown vibe. They're having an open house tonight from 5-8:30pm. It's a whopping 103º in Austin, Texas and while it is not the hottest summer we've had, I'm fed up with this heat!! So other places I'd rather be?

IRELAND.

This was shot in Kinsale, Ireland during the summer. Yes, that's me. The house has no significance other than it is bright blue and I appeared to match it. I took the below holga photo of the window which, in retrospect, I obviously should have shot in color. Live an learn, I suppose.

I hope you are all keeping cool as we brave out the final days of summer. Actually Austin has at least a month left of summer, probably six weeks. So, get thee to a watering hole! I will be dreaming of Ireland, hats, scarves, boots and hot whiskey drinks. I will be dreaming of Autumn.

Emma & Simon - second post

After the ceremony at Emma's childhood home, Emma, Simon and their guests walked down the block for their cocktail hour and then to a tented reception on the corner...

Emma's mother planted sweet peas along upon hearing of Emma and Simon's plans to have the wedding reception on the corner lot. By the time the wedding day arrived, they provided a lovely natural barrier. They were also used in the arrangements on the table as well as Emma's bouquet. The only other flowers were ranunculous from a local farm.

So...I love this wedding. A LOT. Emma and Simon were married in Emma's parent's house in Austin's historic Hyde Park neighborhood. The ceremony took place in the backyard with a well-loved garden as their only backdrop. After the ceremony, they walked down to the end of the block where the reception was held. Those pictures are coming tomorrow. If you love wedding and design, you'll not want to miss it.

A word about wire hangers.

I know I already blogged about Paloma's Nest a few days ago. But I saw this section on her website that you can buy clever custom designed wooden hangers. I thought to myself: "FINALLY!!" This is a necessary detail that is overlooked time and again at weddings. Why, my darlings, will you spend several hundred to many thousands of dollars on your precious wedding gown only to hang it on a wire hanger before putting it on? I know it's probably coming straight from the dry cleaner. But to vastly improve a beautiful photo of your wedding gown, let's try a more elegant option such as satin or wooden.

I only recently learned that she was based out of Austin because I found out we share the same uber talented graphic designer, Jennifer Braham of Brink Creative. Let me introduce you to LC Rocks. They are an 80's rock cover band that I recently had the pleasure of watching at Cyndi and Trae's wedding (more of their wedding photos coming soon). This band was one of the most fun I've seen at a wedding. Actually, ever. The guests never stopped dancing and pretty much lost their minds. In a good way. If you're looking for a high energy band at your wedding with members that have golden flowing locks and wear tight leather pants, these are your guys! They will rock your face off. Well, if you are, you MUST go see this photography opening at the Chelsea Market on May 8 from 9-11:30pm. My friend Dave Mead is an extraordinarily gifted photographer. He went to Alaska last year and shot portraits of contestants entering The World Championship Mustache and Beard Competition. Living in Austin, Texas, it's hard not to notice how seriously men can take their beards. But the contestants of this competition take it to a whole other level. I find myself staring at these portraits for several minutes whenever I see them. So if you're in the city tomorrow evening, you really MUST go to this opening.

I insist. Do it for me! I am shooting a wedding in Austin this weekend so I'm unable to attend.

Emma & Simon, but first the dress.

Yes, I will be sharing this entire wedding with you. But first, we must talk about this dress. THIS DRESS. Before you all email me at once (and literally for months to come, like you did with Sarah Senter) the dress is made by Lanvin. The bride and groom live in Switzerland. So the bride, Emma, was fortunate enough to buy her dress in Paris, France. Dreamy, huh? I actually met the dress before I met Emma. Yes, I just said that I "met the dress." Margot, Emma's mother showed it to me when she returned from Paris. I literally gasped when I saw it. What IS that color? It hung and moved like a dream. I regularly thought about this dress for months. It was perfect for the wedding: understated, elegant...clever, even. Much like Emma herself. I have never seen such a calm bride on her wedding day.

This whole wedding was delightful for us to photograph and again, I will be sharing it on photosmashing. But here's a teaser: the ceremony was held at her parents house in the historic neighborhood in Austin, Texas. The backdrop for the ceremony was simply a well loved garden. The backdrop for the portraits was a barn from the late 19th century that somehow exists in the backyard. The reception was a street party with dancing and cocktails in the middle of the street and a gorgeous tent in an empty lot at the end of the block which the guest enjoyed a three course meal. Gumbo was served as the main course to honor the bride's family being from New Orleans. This tent had the most perfect lighting. A vintage pick up truck blocked off the street. A wall of sweet peas had been planted months ago in preparation and provided a low wall for one side of the tent. A giant chalkboard served as the seating chart and more!

I live in Austin, TX which is a very laid back kind of town when it comes to fashion. Actually when it comes to just about everything! Thankfully most wedding guests rise to the occasion to at least wear their "Sunday Best" when attending a wedding. I have to say that these ladies made my day when their own personal styles. It's only a shame that you aren't able to see their shoes in this picture as well!

And dear Lord, do I love a good hat!! As I have mentioned before on this blog, people (both women and men) don't wear hats enough anymore. Hats are FUN, y'all. They keep the sun out of your eyes, keep your head warm in the winter, they're a wonderful solution for a bad hair day. Not to mention they're a very stylish accessory. I'm not talking about trucker caps (I'm looking at YOU, men of Austin). But why not give it a whirl? Wear a hat to a wedding or party sometime.

Well, the time has finally come to make some of the images online into actual photographs, frame them and put them up on walls. I was a little nervous blowing them up so big because photographs taken with a Holga camera are flawed by design and you never really know what you're going to get. I'm pretty pleased with how well they look in real life and blown up to 20x20 inches.

Wedding Bands - ten years later

We photograph wedding bands all the time. They are visually perfect: bright, shiny and void of any flaws having never been worn. There is something I find so much more beautiful about these wedding bands that are ten years old. They belong to Tom and Julie Morin and we photographed their wedding ten years ago. On January 31, 2010 we were thrilled to photograph their ten year vow renewal (I'll post more photos from that ceremony next week)! As we approach Valentines Day, I thought I'd share these wedding bands with you, a symbol of love and commitment, that are no longer "perfect." They're so much better - there is a ton of love in each imperfection in the metal. Wouldn't you say? You all know I'm not a writer so forgive me if I'm not making a whole lot of sense. But when I saw these again after ten years, all I could think was "WOW. There is a whole lot of love here. And it's gorgeous"

A sad day for fashion

This morning, fashion designer Alexander McQueen was found dead in his London apartment just days before London Fashion week.

This wedding dress was designer by Alexander McQueen for New York event planner Mimi Van Wyck.

A winter wedding - sneak peek

I love it when my brides class up a wedding dress with an appropriate seasonal accessory. Sashes on wedding dresses are not uncommon. But I must say that I've never seen such a perfectly lovely and understated velvet sash.

There are many things I love about winter: scarves, coats, hats, boots, cashmere...OK all winter clothes, hot chocolate, hot toddies, stew. But one of my all time favorite things is how the light looks in the winter.

We shot this wedding last weekend. It was a beautiful day with lovely light, perfect winter accessories, a gorgeous ballroom, delicious food and a few surprises along the way. But most importantly, there was love. Lots and lots of love.
